Huangshan Maofeng is a celebrated Chinese green tea from the Huangshan region of Anhui Province, prized for its delicate floral aroma, tender leaf buds, and subtle sweetness, earning its place among China’s top ten famous teas.
Originating in the late Qing Dynasty (circa 1875–1908), Huangshan Maofeng was developed by local tea farmers in the misty highlands of Huangshan, Anhui Province. Rooted deeply in regional artisanal tradition, this tea reflects the unique terroir and craftsmanship of its mountainous birthplace.
Huangshan Maofeng belongs to the green tea family, characterized by unoxidized leaves that preserve fresh, vegetal qualities. It is made exclusively from local cultivars of Camellia sinensis grown in the Huangshan mountains, distinguishing it within China’s diverse green tea varieties.
The tea leaves are slender and slightly curved, resembling mountain peaks—a feature reflected in the name "Maofeng," meaning "fur peak." Tender buds and first leaves are covered with fine white downy hairs, giving the dry leaf a soft, silvery appearance that hints at its delicate nature.
Harvested by hand in early spring before the Qingming Festival, Huangshan Maofeng undergoes traditional green tea processing including hand-plucking, withering, pan-firing to halt oxidation, rolling, and drying. It is brewed primarily as a loose-leaf infusion, revealing a light yellow-green liquor with a fresh, floral, and slightly sweet character.

The tea is crafted through meticulous traditional green tea processing steps: hand-plucking the tender buds and first leaves, withering to reduce moisture, pan-firing to halt oxidation (kill-green), rolling to shape the leaves, and drying to preserve freshness. This careful sequence preserves the tea’s vibrant aroma and delicate flavor.
